How We Test
Transparent scoring for dash cams and car gear on DashCamAdvice — so you can trust why one model sits above another.
Written by Himanshu Gupta, Editor & Lead Reviewer. Scores are editorial and independent of affiliate commissions (disclosure).
Score pillars
Overall scores are out of 10. Approximate weights for dash cams:
Image quality & night plates (30%)
Daytime detail, HDR under mixed lighting, and whether license plates remain readable at night on typical Indian streets. STARVIS-class sensors score higher when footage backs the claim.
Parking mode & power (20%)
Buffered impact / motion modes, hardwire friendliness, voltage-cutoff behaviour, and whether the unit reboots after heat soak. Supercapacitor designs earn credit in hot climates.
Features that matter in use (20%)
Channels (dual/triple), GPS overlays, WiFi export speed, app stability, voice prompts, and screen usability. We penalise checkbox features that fail in the app.
Build, heat & reliability (15%)
Mount quality, rear-camera weather sealing, thermal behaviour in closed cabins, and card / firmware reliability reports from Indian users.
India value (15%)
Street price, warranty path, accessory availability, and how the kit compares to peers in the same rupee band. A great camera that is never in stock here loses value points.
Evidence we use
- Hands-on or loaned units when available
- Manufacturer specifications cross-checked against listings
- Public footage, owner reports, and reputable teardowns
- India pricing snapshots from major marketplaces
When we have not run a controlled night-plate test ourselves, we say so in the review and rely more on sensor class plus corroborated community footage.
Category pages vs reviews
Product reviews go deep on one model. “Best of” pages re-rank a filtered set for a job (GPS, parking, night, budget). A camera can win parking mode and lose night driving — that is expected.
Updates
Prices and firmware change. We refresh priority reviews and flagship hubs when market shifts are material. Each page shows an updated date where relevant.
